If I could have any super power it would be to help young people realize that we are all special in our own ways, and they should love every part about themselves. Did you know that some very famous people have had difficulty with stuttering, including James Earl Jones (Darth Vader), Emily Blunt, and Winston Churchill? I would love to be able to fly. I went up in a helicopter over the Grand Canyon this summer, and it was so serene up there. I would love to be able to get away into the quiet air, gain perspective on life, and be able to quickly get from place to place. I also love being outside, so that super power would suit me well. Professor Teas - Special Ed1. How long have you been in your current position/teaching? My first teaching job began in January , 1972. My classroom was a “pre-K group” with children aged from 2-12 at the Brown Schools. I took four years off in the late nineties to work as a gardener. Then I returned to teach at Oak Springs as part of the “Blueprint” Project in July, 2002, and have remained at this campus. 2. What do you like most about your current grade/team? Working in special education affords me many opportunities to teach with staff across multiple grade levels. We have frequent turnover at this campus, and as new teachers arrive I continue to be amazed by their level of maturity and willingness to “bite the bullet” and do what needs to be done. I love having all the different personalities and seriously… I constantly steal ideas and energy from by cohorts. Then my two sped teammates just put the icing on the cake for me. I could not make it through each week without them. While they are both “youngsters” in my book, they learn quickly and are so motivated to support our scholars. 3. What is your favorite book and why? Let’s see…. I am not into romance novels. If Yolanda Frost recommends a children’s book then I will be interested in reading her picks. Mysteries and articles about brain function are frequent reads for me. At work I love reading poetry. Early childhood stories are probably my favorites, because they keep me in touch with playing and young hearts. 4. Tell us about your favorite part of Oak Springs. Most treasured…… being able to work with parents and their children for several years. I may begin serving a child at first grade and then work with other siblings from the same household, too. I receive the gift of watching a child or children grow academically and emotionally by the time they leave in fifth grade. 5. If you could have any super power in the world, what would it be and why? Let’s just go ahead and grant me super powers. Then I will outlaw all meanyheadness and whining. Gossip will be banished. And, there will be daily random acts of kindness. 6. Fun fact! I love cooking gumbo and learning about new native plants. In the “olden days” when I was a young teacher I was forced to wear matching polyester pant suits or dresses EVERYDAY. Shopping for work clothes was not fun! Professor Bedgood - Special Ed1.
